Welcome.

This is the story of our daughter Emma. Her story begins with a rare birth defect called Gastroschisis. This space is dedicated to the days before her birth and the many that are sure to follow.

Good morning

Emma's doing well. We watched her sleep last night. She looked very peaceful and had nice relaxed, steady breathing. We talked with the night doctor for the NICU and he spoke very highly of the Duke pedriatic nurses and doctors (no news to us). They ran a PICC line early this morning for better nutrition. It runs near her heart, so we were glad to know it went well. Her bowel is descending well and the color is unchanged (which is good. We just don't want them to get darker in color).

Ava and grandma are on the way over. We'll have some breakfast and head over to Emma.

Hi! I just wanted to say that I have been randomly looking for the last month at your updates and think how wonderful it is that you are doing this. I am 36 weeks pregnant with my fourth child and will be induced in a week and a half for our little Elizabeth who also has gastroschisis. Although we live in Ottawa, Ontario Canada, it has been so helpful reading along with your journey, helping us know what we will be heading up against in the next little while. Emma is gorgeous, and we too have a 17 month old daughter Brooke at home who we have been needing to care for through all this. You are blessed with two gorgeous daughters! God bless, and stay strong. Emma will look back one day and see how great her parents are!

Hi Heather, thank you so much for your kind words. Canada is only a keyboard away from North Carolina in this day and age. I think one of the toughest things we're learning as a parents of more than one child is finding a way to balance your time with each. Lean on other family members as much as you can. You belong to a very supportive community and we're all here if you need to talk about your experience or any questions that may come up.

She literally is a fighter, Kandi. Emma hurt on of the attending nurses when she chomped down on one of her fingers while she adjusted a tube. That's our girl.
